The top 5 reasons for awarding trophies

May 21st, 2013

A trophy helps to motivate competitors

Participants want to win; it’s how human beings are made. Players and coaches want to achieve success in their sports and being able to claim a trophy or prize adds an additional layer of motivation for the competitors. Imagine a team winning a football league with no trophies to collect at the end of the season – unimaginable! Or an Olympian with no gold medal to collect at the end of the games? Competitors are motivated because they want the ultimate prize, and once they have had a taste of it they want it even more.

A trophy is the material representation of a triumph

You will remember the blood, the sweat, the tears and the pain endured to win an individual event or competition. Or, the teamwork, camaraderie and spirit that makes up the elements of a successful team. A trophy is the physical representation of these emotions to ensure you never forget the sacrifices made to achieve greatness.

Trophies mean victory

Victory is a glorious thing which we should celebrate. We don’t give away trophies to everyone; this is special and something that is reserved for those who have conquered, those who have been victorious. Trophies simply stated, mean victory, this is exactly what they represent.

Trophies are retained as proof of achievements

Have you kept the trophies you won as a child? I know I have, tucked away in an old cabinet they are the precious symbols or sporting achievement that will be kept forever. You don’t throw them away; they are kept safe as they really mean something to their owners.

Winners celebrate with trophies

Picture the end of season and what’s the strongest visual that comes to mind? Teams celebrating winning a competition, spraying champagne, embracing and lifting a cup aloft? Or how about a marathon or fun run? A participant with a medal around their neck proving that they have completed the course? Or an athletics meeting? First, second and third places athletes being presented with their awards on top of a rostrum? Winners celebrate with medals, trophies, cups and awards.

These are the top five reasons for awarding trophies at a sporting event.

Reward and encourage talented players with trophies and awards

May 14th, 2013

It’s that time of the season again where winners are crowned up and down the country. Winning teams are built of talented players and these players will amass a collection of trophies and medals throughout their careers.  These awards are the ultimate encouragement for players to continue to deliver high quality sporting performances.

But it isn’t just the players who are congratulated at this time of the season; managers, officials and support staff are also recognised for their contribution to the team with each individual playing their part. Referees can be catered for with whistle resin awards whilst their assistants are covered with various flag trophies for that special thanks for running the line all year long. The game doesn’t happen without them so their importance should not be underestimated.

Junior clubs, amateur adult teams, schools, colleges, universities and boys clubs all finish off their seasons with awards presentations; a great opportunity for teams to celebrate the season past and look forward to future endeavours with their teammates.

Do you remember the awards presentations from when you were a young player or even the ones your own children have attended?

The 2012 Olympics in London has certainly spurred on a new found competitive spirit amongst the youth in Great Britain as many young players look to emulate their sporting heroes who received medals last summer; from Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy in the Cycling to Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis in the Athletics there are a raft of British Olympic role models to look up to an try to emulate. Although the medals they won may be small, the significance is huge to the winning recipient and the country they represent. And, this is no different at every other level of sport; an end of season trophy may seem like a small item but the memories can last a lifetime as their achievements are lasting representations of the blood, sweat and tears that have been shed along the glorious journey to sporting victory. So, don’t pass up the opportunity to reward and encourage talented players with trophies and awards at the end of this season.

Football trophies; a history of English football

April 26th, 2013

There is a particularly interesting race underway at the top of the all-time trophy league for the most major honours won by football clubs in England. There is much debate over which trophies and titles should be included in the list however the general consensus is that the three domestic awards and six major European competitions that have existed over the years are the ones that should be included. These are listed as follows – the Football League up to 1992 then Premier League after, the FA Cup and the League Cup make up the three domestics honours. In terms of Europe there is the Champions League (previously the European Cup), the Cup Winners’ Cup, the UEFA Europa League (previously the UEFA Cup), the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the Club World Cup (previously the Intercontinental Cup).

The first of these honours was won back in the 1871/72 season when Wanderers beat Royal Engineers 1-0 in the final of the first FA Cup. The Football League was set up in 1888 and Preston North End was the first champions of that competition. It wasn’t until 1960 until the League Cup was formed and Aston Villa were the first winners. Whilst Manchester United has won a record number of league championships (20) and FA Cups (11), Liverpool holds the record number of League Cup titles with eight victories.

Moving on to European competition, a total of 32 English teams have competed over the years with 13 different winners emerging. Liverpool holds the record for the number of European Cups and UEFA Cups with five and three wins respectively.

So who heads the list of all time victories?

Liverpool has 41 honours to their name and this has now been matched this season by Manchester United who recorded their 20th League title. Next on the list is Arsenal with 27 followed by Aston Villa with 20. Chelsea is in 5th spot with 18 football trophies won.

£24 million boost from Sport England: opportunities for sports trophies

April 22nd, 2013

Sport England has announced an additional £24 million funding to extend its Sportivate programme. This funding from the National Lottery means Sportivate will add additional support 14 to 25-year-olds encouraging them to get involved in sport up to 2017.

Olympic Gold-medal winning cyclist Joanna Rowsell, the Right Honourable Maria Miller, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and the chief executive of Sport England’s Jennie Price made the announcement at an event in Essex. .

Around 190,000 individuals in this age group have so far benefitted from subsidised six-to-eight week sport courses through Sportivate. Of these, over 150,000 have successfully completed a coaching course, being absent for less than one session.

John White, managing director of Premier Trophies said: ‘We support the new initiative to encourage this age group to become more involved in sports. We need many more coaches to help develop both sporting and life skills in our younger generation and see the vast impact that sport can have in the development of young people. By encouraging initiatives of this nature we can not only help participation but this is also a welcome boost for the sports trophies industry as more individuals will be rewarded for their sporting excellence.’

Jennie Price added: ‘Sportivate’s success is built on listening to what young people want from sport and then giving them great opportunities to get involved. With dozens of traditional and non-traditional sports on offer, lots of young people are getting active and discovering a sport they really enjoy and want to keep playing.’

Joanna Rowsell said: ‘It’s fantastic that Sportivate is helping so many young people to discover a new sport. I only started cycling when I was 15 and it changed my life. Sport can be amazing if you find the one that’s right for you.  Whether you want to get serious about it or concentrate on the fun of taking part, Sportivate can help you to get involved.’

Maria Miller said: ‘The number of people playing sport is on the rise, which is really good news.  We are determined to leave a lasting legacy from London’s Games, and Sportivate is playing a key part in that.  It’s really important we keep the momentum going and help even more young people develop a sporting habit for life.’

Cheap trophies, quality awards

April 20th, 2013

Getting a good deal on your trophies doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality any more. A high percentage of purchases are for less than five pounds per unit, with gold, silver and bronze resin models are all very popular options.

You don’t have to pay any additional fees to personalise your trophies with free engraving on all orders however big or small. What’s more, if you spend over £50 online postage and packaging is also free with you order. So, it’s possible to get high quality cheap trophies.

Trophies have been awarded to mark victories for centuries and in fact the phrase was coined in England back in 1550! In ancient Greece, the Olympic winners didn’t receive any trophies at all; instead they simply received laurel wreaths. After this they were presented with amphora and sacred olive oil. In ancient Rome, winners did not receive trophies; instead they were given money for their victories.

While the Romans may have had an option for a cost effective solution for their winners this is certainly not the case in the modern day. You can also pick up some great deals with over 60% off many products in the sale section in the trophy shop.

Do you run a football team or league? Maybe you organise 5-a-side football tournaments or summer soccer camps? You are going to need some cheap trophies and quality awards to reward your winning players at the end of this season or over the summer.

Motivate People With Trophies and Awards

April 19th, 2013

Your workforce needs to be recognised for their efforts. According to the famous psychologist Abraham Maslow, in his book The Theory of Motivation he is quoted as saying that, “humans need to be recognized for work well done, opportunities for accomplishment, achievement, and independence.”

His hierarchy of needs suggests that humans have five different types of needs:

1.Biological and Physiological Needs (e.g. water and food)

2.Safety Needs (e.g. shelter)

3.Love Needs  (e.g. belonging and acceptance)

4.Esteem Needs (e.g. respect, rewards, and recognition)

5.Self-Actualization Needs (e.g. personal challenge and advancement)

Each of these needs must be met fully before the next need can be attained. For example, all Biological and Physiological Needs must be met before an individual will worry about Safety Needs. Safety Needs must be met before an individual will look for Love Needs etc.

From an organisational point of view you can easily see that many of these basic needs  can be expressed at work.

The five different types of Organizational Needs, according to Maslow, include:

1.Compensation and Benefits (e.g. fair pay, health insurance, and retirement)

2.Location and Working Conditions (e.g. commute, available resources, and working environment)

3.Acceptance and Involvement (e.g. a feeling of belonging)

4.Recognition (e.g. being acknowledged for a job well done)

5.Advancement and Growth (e.g. an opportunity to grow and be challenged)

Rewarding employees for their contributions and achievements directly meets their needs for esteem, self-respect, and respect for others. Corporate awards and trophies are a cost effective solution to help meet the needs of your high performing staff members.

Time for trophies

April 17th, 2013

It’s all or nothing at this stage of the season for the professional football clubs across Europe’s leagues. Whilst the titles are all but wrapped up in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga, there is still much to play for elsewhere with teams fighting to secure silver wear this season. Player will look back on their careers and ultimately be judged on the number of trophies won, in domestic and European cup competition and also national championships.

The approach is the same at all levels of the game and whilst the top teams are fighting for the right to call themselves ‘champions’, teams at all the other levels of the game from semi-professional men to under 6 amateur junior teams will all have a goal of finishing this season with a trophy to show for their efforts.

Many junior football clubs across the UK have now taken the decision to reward all players for their efforts over the season and as such cheap trophies are important to enable the clubs to cost effectively facilitate this. With this in mind trophy shops have made available awards at very low entry level prices. So do bear this in mind; it may not be as expensive as you thought to reward all your players with a football trophy this year.

Trophies boost in school sport revamp

April 9th, 2013

The government’s new school sports policy has been met with unanimous approval from the various sports governing bodies. Prime Minister David Cameron and his Olympic legacy advisor Lord Coe recently announced a long-awaited strategy which is set to hand school sport a £150m funding boost (per year for two years).

This ring-fenced money will be given directly to primary schools in England and they will be able to pay for extra coaching sessions to improve the quality of sports and PE provision. The new funds for primary schools come directly from the Department for Education, Department of Health and Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “We can create a culture in our schools that encourages all children to be active and enjoy sport. The Olympic and Paralympic Games marked an incredible year for this country and I will always be proud that we showed the world what Britain can do. I want to ensure the Games count for the future too and that means capitalising on the inspiration young people took from what they saw during those summer months.”

The Government says the new scheme will involve:

>A typical primary school with 250 primary-aged pupils would receive £9,250 per year.

>A greater role for sporting and voluntary organisations, including the National Governing Bodies.

>Sport England investing £1.5 million a year of lottery funding through the County Sport partnerships.

>More primary teachers with a particular specialism in PE via new teacher training programmes.

Shadow Sports Minister Clive Efford said: “This money is extremely welcome but we would be in a much better situation had the government not taken £162m away from SSPs in 2010 and left the structures that were in place to crumble. David Cameron wanting praise for putting money back into school sport is like a burglar returning stolen goods and expecting to be hailed as a public hero.”

Andy Reed, chair of the Sport and Recreation Alliance said: “It’s a policy that will tick a lot of the boxes. There’s investment, there’s ring-fencing, there’s NGB involvement and there’s measurement, all of which were at the top of the list for sports bodies. There was a glaring gap in the Government’s Olympic legacy plans and this policy addresses that. This is an acknowledgement that PE and sport should play a central role in every pupil’s experience and that the skills they give children are as important as being able to read, write and add. It also recognises that it makes sense for schools to draw on the expertise of governing bodies as early and as deeply as practical. Ministers should encourage heads to embrace the wide variety of physical activity on offer to them so that every child can find something that they like.”

Increased focus on sport across schools is a welcome political shift for the trophy industry and is sure to create demand for school trophies to reward high performing individuals across all sports.
